Equality

Matt Cartwright believes in protecting the civil rights of American citizens, including their right to privacy, their right to engage in collective bargaining, their right to vote in elections without new and burdensome requirements, and their right to live in a country that has no tolerance for crimes of hate.

Defense

Matt Cartwright believes in a strong national defense based on a realistic view of the threats of tomorrow with investment only in long-term technology. Matt also believes in reaffirming our nations commitment to our alliance to Israel, and forming international bonds to counter terrorism.

Infrastructure

Matt Cartwright believes that the federal government needs to invest in American infrastructure. He believes that investing in one-off, earmarked pork projects is the wrong approach. Instead, Cartwright believes America needs a comprehensive, cohesive plan for our infrastructure, so businesses can compete with global competitors, and we can stop the flow of American jobs overseas.

Economy

Matt Cartwright believes that the government has a vital role to play in smoothing out the rough edges in what is called the free market. For instance, banks should not be allowed to gamble with our money. And when the housing market collapsed, judges should have been allowed to adjust mortgages in order to minimize foreclosures, keeping families in their homes and communities intact. New tax breaks for families should replace old tax loopholes for corporations. And Research into new medicines and new forms of energy can not be left solely to the profit sector, or the resources necessary to make the breakthroughs of tomorrow that create new industries with new jobs will not be invested today.

Environment

Matt Cartwright believes a strong economy and a protected environment are not mutually exclusive. For instance, he believes that the Halliburton Loophole which allows fluids used in the natural gas extraction process of Hydraulic fracturing to be exempt from protections under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act, should be repealed, and that the rights to drill and mine on public lands should not be given away to private, international corporations for pennies on the dollar, resulting in Americas people receiving no benefit from Americas bounty.

Healthcare

Matt would have supported President Obamas Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. He remains dissatisfied, however, that it did not go far enough to expand health care coverage for more Americans and hold insurance companies more accountable for what they charge families.
